Leslie, in regards to the question you asked me about pushing yourself to use the manual mode, i actually started with apertue and when I was comfortable with manual, then i jumped in. What i did is browse around different photography forums and websites where people can share their photos with their exif. IF there are photos that I like, I take note of the settings and mimic it as a practice for myself.

Also, participate in forums that just doesn't comment on your photo saying "nice shot" or "great one"...look for forums that will disect your photo and will really give your criticisms. Just don't take them personally. Also, participate in weekly challenges. Here are two of the websites that does photo challenges: I heart Faces and DPS - Digital Photography School. Usually, they come up with a theme and it's up to you to interpret it. Of all the times that I have participated, I have only been credited to one photo in the top 10. But what i like about the challenge is it pushes my imagination and creativity to come up with an answer to the theme. It also gives you inspiration through other people's photography.

Try signing up on Flickr and post your photos on different groups. It's a photosharing site. It's a great way for you to look for inspiration.

But aside from all those mentioned, I guess the best part is hanging around with people who are into photography. Look for local photography meet-ups. Or look for somebody in your area whom you can shadow or tag-along. I've made good friends with local photographers when I dared myself to ask one photographer to be tagged along in his photowalk. And that's when I got my shots that you liked.

That's how I all started. I also look around for different tutorials all over the internet.

I apologize if this is getting longer than it should have been. :)

But still, feel free to let me know if I can be of any help. In that way, you're not only learning but I am too! :)
